Chapter Eleven
Overview
Tommy escalates pressure with a false domestic-violence report against Cal and a council inspection that jeopardizes Sheila’s tenancy, rattling Trey. Community tensions flare, and Bobby brings a toxic rumor blaming Lena for Rachel’s death. Cal repairs Sheila’s roof, sees the pattern, and concludes Tommy likely engineered Rachel’s death to hide a larger scheme.
Summary
Cal and Trey visit Sylvester for lumber; Trey buys a walnut burl, hinting at a Christmas gift. Returning home, Garda Dennis arrives about a report claiming Cal struck Lena during their dog walk. Cal calmly provides an alibi and points out inconsistencies, recognizing Tommy’s hand. He warns Lena, who is angry but distant; Cal reads it as a pulled-punch warning from Tommy.
On Monday, Noreen mentions a rock thrown through Long John Sharkey’s window, reflecting rising tensions. Cal returns to find Trey unexpectedly at his place: a council inspector has cited Sheila’s rental for roof, damp, and safety issues, threatening their tenancy—another pressure move. Cal promises quick fixes, but Trey demands stronger action; Cal urges patience.
Tuesday, Cal installs a CO monitor and repairs Sheila’s roof. Sheila says Tommy wanted their field and resents being refused; she has even threatened to spread that Eugene beat Rachel. Afterward, at Seán Óg’s, Bobby excitedly seeks proposal advice about Róisín, asks Cal to be a groomsman, then warns him of a new rumor: that Lena believed Cal had been with Rachel and forced a confrontation that drove Rachel to suicide. Cal denies it but sees Tommy weaponizing gossip.
Shaken, Cal walks to the river and scours the banks for overlooked evidence, finding nothing. Thinking it through, he realizes Tommy should want the town to move on, not ignite new scandal—unless it’s to smother a more dangerous truth. Cal concludes Tommy likely arranged Rachel’s death, directly or by proxy, as part of a broader coverup. He resolves to tell Lena, though he lacks a plan.
