Overview
Cal struggles with Lena’s withdrawal and Trey’s fury over Mart’s nonviolent plan. That night, Mart musters a masked crowd to confront Tommy at his home, roaring demands without crossing into violence. A distant siren breaks the standoff and the men disperse with a prepared alibi. Lena, hearing the mob and lights, realizes Cal brought her findings to Mart and fears Tommy’s retaliation.
Summary
Cal carves a trefoil for Lena and, after a distant text exchange, feels her pulling away. Trey arrives, rejects Mart’s plan as letting Tommy escape justice, even suggesting killing him. Cal insists the goal is to disgrace and pressure Tommy to stop the factory land grab, not to escalate violence. Trey debates leaving Ardnakelty but admits she now feels she has earned her place. They plan a cabinet project, and Trey decides to stay the night.
Mart, P.J., and Senan arrive, recruiting Cal for a “cards” pretext. Despite Trey’s demand to come, Cal leaves her behind. As they walk toward the village, men join from lanes and gates, many with tools, forming a large, largely faceless crowd.
At Tommy’s floodlit house, dozens encircle the property. Chants of “Hands off our land” and “Out” build to a threatening rhythm, and the crowd edges toward violence. Mart restrains a man about to throw a rock, holding the line at intimidation rather than attack. A distant siren sounds; Mart calmly orders a retreat, and the men melt away with an agreed alibi.
Across town, Lena hears the chant and sees the glow of Tommy’s security lights. Panic flares until she realizes the mob targets Tommy, not her. She understands Cal took her information to Mart and fears Tommy will retaliate. She feels there is nowhere left to run.
On the road back, Mart frames the action as a successful warning while Senan and P.J. condemn Tommy for calling the Guards and hiding. Mart predicts Tommy will send an emissary. Cal returns home shaken; Trey, satisfied by his expression, makes tea as he offers few words about the night.
