Chapter Eight: Orka
Overview
At their steading, Orka and Thorkel debate protecting Breca versus hardening him, while Breca forges a blood‑oath between Spert and the injured tennúr, Vesli. Riders led by Guðvarr summon them to Jarl Sigrún’s Althing in six days. Despite distrust and fears of child‑stealers, Orka and Thorkel choose to attend, wary of drawing attention.
Summary
Orka sharpens her seax while watching Breca tend a wounded tennúr. She and Thorkel debate how strictly to raise their son, revealing Orka’s vigilance and Thorkel’s resolve to choose joy despite past trauma. Their banter hints at hopes for another child, but Orka’s unease lingers.
By the stream, Breca brings food to Spert. When Spert reacts to the tennúr with hostile vaesen magic, Breca intervenes and persuades both sides toward trust. Vesli offers a life‑blood oath to serve Breca and Spert; Spert accepts, binding them in a protective pact.
A distant approach of riders snaps Orka and Thorkel into readiness. Thorkel arms with a long‑axe, invoking the recent threat of child‑stealers, and Orka steels herself, shaken by violent memories. They secure Breca and Vesli inside and go to the gate.
Guðvarr arrives with two drengrs, including Arild, to announce Jarl Sigrún’s return and an Althing at the Oath Rock in six days. They refuse hospitality and depart to finish their circuit. Orka resents the summons, but Thorkel argues that refusing would draw suspicion.
Together they decide to attend the Althing, planning to keep silent and unnoticed. Orka senses danger in Thorkel’s resolve and dreads the wider struggles unfolding beyond their hard‑won peace.
