Chapter Twelve: Orka
Overview
Virk defeats Guðvarr in holmganga but, provoked, attempts an illegal killing blow. Sigrún’s warrior-thrall intervenes savagely and kills Virk, forcing Sigrún to reassert control via the thrall collar.
The outcome cements Guðvarr’s survival, stains the duel’s honor, and heightens tensions around Sigrún’s harsh authority and the threat of tamed god-blood.
Summary
At the Althing, Orka serves as Virk’s second for a holmganga against Guðvarr. Jarl Sigrún enforces the rule that the duel be to submission, and Orka explains the customs to Breca. Guðvarr attacks wildly; Virk absorbs the blows despite an injured arm.
Virk exploits Guðvarr’s overreach, shattering mail and cutting his shoulder, driving Guðvarr beyond the hazel boundary. When Guðvarr squeals submission, Virk, taunted and enraged, raises his axe for a killing blow, breaking the agreed terms.
Before Orka can intervene, Sigrún’s warrior-thrall launches onto Virk, stabbing and mauling him with ulfrir-like ferocity. Thorkel kicks the thrall off; Orka surges to strike, but Thorkel restrains her as Sigrún activates the thrall’s collar with pain-commands, forcing obedience after initial defiance.
Sigrún declares that Virk broke holmganga and that justice stands, though she pointedly reins in the thrall. Guðvarr is bound and sullen; Virk’s sons Mord and Lif weep. Orka, Thorkel, Breca, and the sons wrap Virk’s body and carry it away, while the thrall watches and licks blood from a seax.
