Chapter Forty-Seven: Varg
Overview
Varg wakes amid chaos to learn Skalk abducted Vol and Torvik is dead. The Bloodsworn reveal they are all Tainted: Glornir is bear-blooded, Svik fox-blooded, and Varg wolf-blooded. After shock and acceptance, Varg is invited into the Bloodsworn. Glornir rallies the band to hunt Skalk and reclaim Vol.
Summary
Varg awakens to screams, restrained by Røkia and Svik, and sees Olvir dead and Torvik’s corpse nearby. Einar and others brace a door behind which Glornir, maddened with grief over Vol’s abduction, rages. Varg learns Skalk stole the bone-sword and took Vol, and that Yrsa killed Torvik.
Svik and Røkia reveal the deeper truth: Glornir is Berserkir, Svik fox-blooded, and the Bloodsworn are all Tainted. Edel confirms Varg’s blood betrays a wolf, and Røkia identifies him as Úlfhéðnar. Overwhelmed, Varg flees outside, battling shame and fear as he confronts his nature.
Outside, Jökul frees thralls and steadies Varg with food and counsel, urging focus on avenging Torvik and rescuing Vol. Svik, Edel, and Røkia explain their secrecy and test of trust; Varg admits his near-temptation by Skalk but remains with them. Røkia awards Varg brynja and a helm won in the fray.
Glornir regains control, emerges armed, and formally invites Varg to join the Bloodsworn. Varg accepts; Glornir gifts him a silver arm ring, promising the oath words later. The Bloodsworn, unified and grim, raise a war cry and set their purpose: hunt down Skalk and bring Vol home.
