The Vanishing Glass

Nearly a decade after Harry is left on Privet Drive, the Dursley household shows no trace of him beyond his chores and cupboard under the stairs. On Dudley’s birthday, Harry cooks breakfast while Dudley counts excessive presents. When Mrs. Figg breaks her leg and cannot babysit, the Dursleys reluctantly bring Harry to the zoo, warning him against any “funny business.”

Harry reflects on strange incidents he cannot control—his hair growing back overnight, a shrinking sweater, and an accidental escape onto a school roof—highlighting both his isolation and the Dursleys’ hostility. Despite this, the morning at the zoo goes unusually well, with Harry keeping his distance to avoid Dudley and Piers’s bullying.

In the reptile house, Harry empathizes with a bored boa constrictor and appears to communicate with it. After Dudley shoves him aside, the glass front of the snake’s enclosure vanishes. The boa slides out and causes panic, seemingly thanking Harry as it departs.

The reptile house staff and director scramble to respond, while Dudley and Piers exaggerate the danger. Piers reports that Harry spoke to the snake, increasing suspicion. Back home, Uncle Vernon, furious, confines Harry to his cupboard without meals.

Alone, Harry contemplates his parents’ supposed car-crash deaths, a recurring vision of green light and pain, and odd strangers who seem to recognize him before vanishing. He remains friendless at school under Dudley’s dominance, with the day’s incident intensifying the sense that something unusual surrounds him.
