Diagon Alley

Harry wakes in the sea hut to find the owl-delivered Daily Prophet and wizarding coins. Hagrid assures Harry his parents left money and plans a trip to Gringotts, explaining goblins and wizarding banking. They return to shore by magically speeding the boat and head to London, where Hagrid mentions the Ministry of Magic and Dumbledore’s influence.

At the Leaky Cauldron, patrons recognize Harry as famous; he meets Professor Quirrell, who teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts. In the courtyard, Hagrid opens the hidden entrance to Diagon Alley. Amid the bustling shops, they reach Gringotts, where a goblin verifies Harry’s vault key and a Dumbledore letter authorizing access to Vault 713.

Griphook drives them through the deep tunnels. Harry retrieves gold from his vault, while Vault 713—opened by goblin magic—contains only a small wrapped package that Hagrid secretly secures. Afterward, Hagrid sends Harry to be fitted for robes at Madam Malkin’s, where a pale, snobbish boy voices elitist views about bloodlines and Houses, souring Harry’s mood.

Hagrid and Harry continue shopping: parchment, quills, and schoolbooks at Flourish and Blotts, an apothecary visit, and equipment. Hagrid buys Harry a snowy owl as a birthday present. Finally, they visit Ollivanders, where numerous wands fail before a holly-and-phoenix-feather wand chooses Harry, producing sparks. Mr. Ollivander reveals its phoenix feather shares a twin with the wand that gave Harry his scar, hinting at a fateful connection.

Weighed by expectations of greatness he doesn’t understand, Harry rides back toward the Dursleys with his supplies and owl. Hagrid reassures him, gives him his Hogwarts ticket for September 1 at King’s Cross, and sends him off, confident Harry will find his place at Hogwarts.
