The Boy Who Lived

On Privet Drive, the Dursleys pride themselves on normality while hiding Petunia Dursley’s estranged, unusual family, the Potters. During his workday, Vernon Dursley notices a cat seemingly reading, cloaked people celebrating, and daytime owls. Hearing the names “Potters” and “Harry” unsettles him, and news reports confirm widespread oddities: owls and shooting stars.

That evening, Vernon cautiously asks Petunia about her sister. They confirm the nephew’s name is Harry, but decide not to engage further. Outside, the tabby cat waits, vigilant. Near midnight, Albus Dumbledore arrives, extinguishes the streetlights with a device, and greets the cat, who transforms into Professor McGonagall.

Professor McGonagall rebukes careless public celebrating and seeks confirmation of rumors. Dumbledore confirms that Voldemort targeted the Potters in Godric’s Hollow: Lily and James are dead, but Voldemort failed to kill baby Harry and has vanished. They discuss the implications of Harry’s sudden fame and Dumbledore’s insistence on using Voldemort’s name.

Hagrid lands on a flying motorcycle, delivering the sleeping baby Harry, marked by a lightning-shaped scar. Dumbledore decides Harry must live with his only remaining family, the Dursleys, away from wizarding fame until he is ready. Despite McGonagall’s doubts about the Dursleys and Hagrid’s grief, Dumbledore remains firm.

Dumbledore places Harry on number four’s doorstep with a letter explaining everything. After a somber farewell, Hagrid departs on the motorcycle, Dumbledore restores the streetlights, and they both leave. Harry sleeps on, unaware of his fame and of the mourning and quiet toasts being made across the country to “the boy who lived.”
