Through the Trapdoor

As exams end, Harry’s scar pains and anxiety grow. A realization strikes: the stranger who gave Hagrid the dragon egg likely extracted how to pacify Fluffy. Hagrid inadvertently confirms he revealed the music trick. Rushing to warn staff, the trio learn Dumbledore has been urgently called away, and Professor McGonagall dismisses their fears while Snape pointedly warns Harry about rule-breaking.

Convinced the theft will be tonight, Harry decides to reach the Stone first. Ron and Hermione insist on helping. That night, they stop Neville by Body-Binding him, evade Mrs. Norris and bluff Peeves, and find the third-floor door ajar. Using Hagrid’s flute, they put Fluffy to sleep and drop through the trapdoor.

They land in Devil’s Snare; Hermione frees them with conjured fire. In a chamber of winged keys, Harry, leveraging Seeker skills, captures the battered silver key to open the door. Next, they become chess pieces on a giant board. Guided by Ron’s strategy, they battle across until Ron deliberately sacrifices himself to allow Harry to checkmate the king.

Harry and Hermione press on, leaving Ron unconscious but alive. They pass a felled, larger troll, then encounter a potion-logic challenge ringed by purple and black flames. Hermione solves the riddle, identifying a forward and a backward potion.

Harry sends Hermione back to fetch Ron and warn Dumbledore, while he drinks the forward potion. Ice floods him as he walks through black fire into the final chamber—where he finds someone waiting, but not Snape, nor Voldemort.
