Overview
Harry struggles to find Platform 9¾ until the Weasleys show him how, launching his first journey to Hogwarts. On the train he bonds with Ron, learns wizarding customs, meets Hermione and Neville, and confronts Draco Malfoy. The first years arrive at Hogwarts by boat with Hagrid, awed by the castle.
Summary
Harry endures a silent final month with the Dursleys, names his owl Hedwig, and counts down to September 1. Uncle Vernon begrudgingly drives Harry to King’s Cross, then abandons him, mocking the nonexistent Platform 9¾. Panicking, Harry overhears a red-haired family mention Muggles and asks their mother for help. Mrs Weasley explains how to pass through the barrier, and Harry successfully reaches the Hogwarts Express.
On the platform, Harry observes the Weasley family dynamics and receives help loading his trunk from twins Fred and George, who recognize him by his scar. After the train departs, Ron Weasley joins Harry’s compartment. They exchange food, discuss wizarding families, Houses, and Harry’s past, and Harry learns about Chocolate Frog cards and Every Flavor Beans. Ron admits family pressures and hand-me-downs, while Harry shares his Muggle upbringing.
Neville Longbottom briefly searches for his lost toad. Hermione Granger arrives with Neville, briskly critiques Ron’s spell, introduces herself, and urges them to change into robes. Ron and Harry talk about a recent, unsolved Gringotts break-in and Quidditch, deepening their new friendship.
Draco Malfoy enters with Crabbe and Goyle, offers Harry a condescending “friendship,” insults the Weasleys and Hagrid, and threatens Harry. Harry refuses; a scuffle is averted when Scabbers bites Goyle, sending the trio fleeing. Hermione returns to hurry them along as the train nears its destination.
At nightfall the train stops. Hagrid gathers the first years, leading them down to a black lake where they take boats to Hogwarts. The students marvel at the castle’s towering silhouette. At an underground harbor, Hagrid finds Neville’s toad, Trevor, and the group climbs to the castle doors, poised to begin their new lives.
