Overview
Alix becomes increasingly uneasy as Josie settles into the house and assumes she can stay for several days, while still refusing to contact Walter or involve family or authorities. Josie redirects the day toward the podcast, where she begins discussing her daughters and admits to concealing Roxy’s childhood violence and failing as a parent.
The chapter deepens the mystery around the Fair household by contrasting Josie’s abuse narrative with later documentary testimony about the family’s disturbing emotional flatness. Roxy’s early cruelty and Josie’s evasions suggest that the danger in the Fair family is more complicated than Josie’s version allows.
Summary
The next morning, Alix asks Josie whether Josie has spoken to Erin or Walter. Josie says Erin is fine by message but refuses to contact Walter. When Alix asks how Josie plans to move forward, Josie says she needs time to process and firmly rejects involving Josie’s mother.
Alix suggests that Josie will eventually need to speak to Walter and even offers to do it herself, but Josie refuses. Josie asks to remain at Alix’s house for a while, making Alix realize with discomfort that Josie assumes she can stay all week. Alix tells Josie that Alix’s sister arrives Saturday and that the guest room will be needed then, so Josie promises to leave before that.
Alix offers to connect Josie with Mari le Jeune, a domestic abuse charity co-founder whom Alix previously interviewed, in case Josie feels unsafe. Josie accepts the offer in principle but insists she feels safe. When Alix says Nathan is working and Alix planned to take the children out for lunch, Josie asks instead to spend time on the podcast because she wants to talk about her daughters.
A later Netflix documentary segment features Mandy Redwood, a Parkside Primary School administrator, recalling that Alix once asked about the Fair family. Mandy describes Roxy breaking another child’s finger in reception by standing on it, and she remembers Josie and Walter as strangely emotionless when called in. Mandy says that after later events, and after checking records, the incident seemed to make more sense.
In the podcast recording from 14 July 2019, Alix asks Josie about the broken-finger incident. Josie says she never told Walter because he was mostly absent from school life and the family feared his temper. Josie claims Walter was rough with the girls, especially Roxy, and later became violent; she then admits she was not a good parent because she let bad things happen and did not stop them.
By 2 p.m., Alix’s daughter Eliza calls to say Leon is annoying her and she is hungry. Alix pauses the recording and ends the session, apologizing for leaving the children alone too long. Josie apologizes for being selfish and says she is afraid that if she does not tell everything at once, she will lock it away again, but Alix reassures her they can continue the next day.
