Overview
Alix interviews Katelyn, who admits she helped Josie trap Nathan under the false belief that she was exposing an unfaithful husband and helping Alix. Katelyn’s testimony confirms that Nathan loved Alix and was manipulated while helplessly drunk, giving Alix both comfort and deeper pain.
The chapter then frames Alix’s podcast as a completed Netflix series and presents Alix’s final message: she is trying to rebuild, but Josie remains at large. Alix ends by condemning Josie’s crimes and refusing to grant her any victimhood or justification.
Summary
Alix meets Katelyn outdoors during the pandemic, nervous and conflicted because Katelyn helped Josie lure Nathan away on the night he died. Katelyn is warm, apologetic, and eager to talk, and Alix prepares her phone and microphone to record the interview for the podcast.
Katelyn explains that she met Josie in an alterations shop and already knew Josie by reputation as the woman who ran off with her mother’s boyfriend. Katelyn says Josie convinced her that Nathan was unfaithful and that exposing him would help Alix escape a bad marriage. Although the payment mattered, Katelyn insists she mainly believed she was helping another woman.
Katelyn then gives Alix a painful correction: Nathan was not interested in Katelyn sexually. Nathan was extremely drunk, talked constantly about Alix, showed Katelyn photos, and seemed to want only a drinking companion. Katelyn admits she took control of Nathan’s phone, lied that she was messaging Alix to come for him, and kept Nathan calm while knowing Josie was actually coming.
Alix struggles with rage and grief, but Katelyn tells Alix to hate her if necessary and says she is not seeking friendship or forgiveness. Katelyn wants to contribute to the podcast and help Alix’s work succeed, because she now understands that her supposed attempt to help Alix “fly” instead destroyed Alix’s life. Katelyn assures Alix that Nathan adored Alix, their children, and his life, and the formal interview begins.
The narrative shifts to the Netflix version of Hi! I’m Your Birthday Twin!, showing Alix’s studio and playing Alix’s closing podcast message from August 2020, one year after Nathan’s funeral. Alix describes life during the pandemic, the family’s new puppy Matilda, a possible documentary deal, and Roxy and Erin moving in together.
Alix closes by acknowledging that there is no true closure because Josie Fair remains missing. Alix lists Josie’s crimes against Brooke Ripley, Walter, Erin, and Nathan, and argues that Josie stole not only Nathan’s life but every future choice Alix and Nathan might have made. Alix rejects any claim that Josie acted as a victim or on anyone else’s behalf, names Josie evil, and ends the podcast.
