Overview

Alix visits the lodge where Nathan died and is overwhelmed by grief, guilt, and a crisis of self-understanding. Erin wakes from her coma, and documentary footage reveals that Brooke Ripley’s body has been found in a garage linked to Walter Fair.

Through interviews, Erin confirms Josie’s long pattern of control and abuse, reveals Josie’s likely murder of Brooke, and explains how Josie’s fabricated story about Walter was part of an attempt to stop Walter and Erin from escaping her. These revelations shift Josie from manipulative fugitive to the apparent center of multiple deaths and years of family terror.

Summary

DC Sabrina Albright allows Alix to stand just inside the lodge where Nathan spent his final days, though it remains a crime scene. Alix is unexpectedly comforted by the lodge’s beauty and its resemblance to her own home, then collapses into grief and self-reproach as she questions her marriage, motherhood, feminism, privilege, and decision to involve Josie in her life.

At 8:30 a.m., Erin wakes in hospital. Roxy calls the nurses, then tries to steady Erin as Erin realizes where she is and asks about Josie and Walter. Roxy confirms Walter died but avoids explaining Josie’s whereabouts, instead distracting Erin with news of her online support and the SaveErased campaign until Pat returns and joyfully greets her granddaughter.

The chapter shifts into footage from the Netflix series Hi! I’m Your Birthday Twin!. A police recording and news report reveal that the remains of Brooke Ripley, missing since her 2014 school prom, have been found in the boot of a car in a Kilburn garage leased by Walter Fair. The report also summarizes Erin’s rescue, Nathan’s death, and the ongoing search for Josie, while DC Albright describes Brooke still wearing her white prom dress.

In another documentary segment, Brooke’s mother, Abigail Kurti, explains that Brooke had been dramatic and had run away before, so the family did not know what to think when she vanished. Abigail says she did not know about Brooke’s connection to Roxy or the significance of Brooke getting off the bus near the Fair home; she believes that if she had known, police might have questioned Josie and stopped her earlier.

In a later interview, Erin sits beside Roxy and describes Josie’s controlling and abusive hold over the family. Erin says Josie isolated Walter from his first family and Pat, sabotaged Walter’s bond with the girls, tied Roxy to the Naughty Chair, and resented Walter’s secret support of Erin’s gaming career. Erin believes Josie sensed that Walter and Erin were preparing to escape, which drove Josie to attach herself to Alix and fabricate allegations against Walter.

Erin then reveals what she witnessed the night Brooke disappeared: Brooke came to the Fair flat looking for Roxy, Josie blamed Brooke for Roxy running away, and after Brooke challenged Josie, Erin heard a violent struggle that ended in silence. Erin also recounts the later night Josie appeared on Alix’s doorstep: Josie accused Walter of being a paedophile, Walter finally challenged Josie, and after Walter collapsed, Erin attacked Josie with a remote and called her a murderer. Josie overpowered Erin, blamed both Walter and Erin for driving her to violence, and Erin later woke tied to a chair in the cupboard.
