Chapter 4

Overview

Ponyboy and Johnny are cornered by drunk Socs at the park; Bob and David force Ponyboy underwater until Johnny fatally stabs Bob to save him. Panicked, they turn to Dally, who arms them, gives cash, and sends them to hide in an abandoned church near Windrixville. The boys flee by freight train and hole up on Jay Mountain, marking a decisive break from their old lives and escalating the Greasers–Socs conflict.

Summary

In the pre-dawn chill at the park, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny Cade try to cool off after running away from home. A blue Mustang circles, and five drunk Socs—led by Bob and Randy—approach, furious about Cherry and Marcia leaving with Greasers. Insults escalate until Bob orders David to “give the kid a bath.” David pins Ponyboy and forces his head into the fountain.

As Ponyboy drowns, Johnny acts. When Ponyboy comes to on the pavement, coughing water, he sees Bob lying dead and Johnny holding a bloodied switchblade. Johnny explains he stabbed Bob to stop the drowning and prevent another beating like one he suffered before. Panic sets in as Ponyboy fears the electric chair and reform school; Johnny steadies him and decides they must run.

They go to Buck Merril’s to find Dallas Winston. Dally, sober and bruised from a fight, listens without shock, praises Johnny’s move, and equips them with a loaded gun, fifty dollars, a dry shirt, his jacket, and a plan: catch the 3:15 freight to Windrixville and hide in an abandoned church on Jay Mountain. He instructs them to buy food before the story breaks and to stay hidden; he’ll come when it’s safe.

Following Dally’s instructions, Ponyboy and Johnny hop the freight, rattling toward Windrixville. Ponyboy grapples with the reality that quiet Johnny has killed someone and that they are fugitives. At dawn they jump off, ask a farmer for directions, climb to the church, and slip inside. Uneasy in the spooky, empty building, they finally collapse and sleep, fugitives beginning their life in hiding.
