Chapter 7

Overview

Reporters descend on the hospital as Ponyboy learns Dally will recover but Johnny is critically injured and likely crippled. Back home, the paper casts the Greasers as heroes while hinting at juvenile court and possible separation. Soda’s troubles surface, and later Randy confides he’ll skip the rumble, questioning its purpose. Ponyboy begins to see Socs as human.

Summary

In the hospital waiting room, reporters and police barrage Ponyboy with questions until Darry intervenes. A doctor tells them Dally will recover from burns, but Johnny is in critical condition with a broken back and severe burns and may be crippled. Shaken, the brothers go home and collapse from exhaustion.

In the morning, Ponyboy cooks while Two-Bit and Steve arrive. A newspaper story calls Ponyboy and Johnny heroes for rescuing the children and praises the Curtis brothers, but it also mentions juvenile court and hints Ponyboy and Sodapop might be placed in a home. The possibility of separation alarms Ponyboy. Darry and Soda head to work, leaving Two-Bit to stay with Ponyboy.

Sodapop’s girlfriend Sandy has moved to Florida under family pressure, revealing Soda’s private heartbreak. Ponyboy admits a recurring nightmare has returned, worrying Darry.

Later, Ponyboy and Two-Bit go out and are approached by Socs in a blue Mustang. Randy Adderson privately tells Ponyboy he will skip the rumble, grieving Bob’s death and condemning the cycle of violence as pointless because class divisions won’t change.

Ponyboy challenges Randy’s bitterness and recognizes that individuals, not labels, matter. He leaves the conversation feeling that Socs are human too, even as the looming rumble and Johnny’s condition cast long shadows.

Protects Ponyboy from reporters, hears dire news about Johnny, manages the household, and worries over Ponyboy’s nightmares.
  • Randy Adderson
Socrates’ friend of Bob; confides he’ll skip the rumble, denounces the futility of fighting, humanizes the Soc perspective.
  • Two-Bit Mathews
Jokes to lighten tension, keeps Ponyboy company, enforces no-fighting rule before the rumble, and helps around the house.
  • Steve Randle
Teases Ponyboy, spars with Darry verbally, and reveals Sandy’s situation while hanging out at the Curtis house.
  • Johnny Cade
Hospitalized and critical with a broken back and burns; calls for friends and may be permanently crippled.
  • Dallas (Dally) Winston
Hospitalized with severe arm burns; expected to recover, ironically praised as a hero in the paper.
