Chapter 5
Overview
Hiding in the Jay Mountain church, Ponyboy and Johnny disguise themselves, endure days of isolation, and deepen their bond over books and shared sensibilities. Dallas arrives with Sodapop’s letter, food, and news: the city has erupted into Soc–Greaser warfare, a rumble is set, and Cherry has turned spy for the Greasers.
Summary
Ponyboy wakes in the abandoned church disoriented and alone until Johnny returns with supplies: food, matches, cards, peroxide, and a copy of Gone with the Wind. To evade capture, Johnny insists they cut their hair and bleach Ponyboy’s, severing a key part of their Greaser identity and leaving both boys shaken.
As fear and homesickness surge, Johnny breaks down over killing Bob to save Ponyboy, while Ponyboy admits his confusion and grief. They resolve to stop crying and endure together. Over the next several days they read Gone with the Wind, play poker, and talk; Johnny admires Dally’s “gallantry,” and Ponyboy recites Robert Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” crystallizing their shared sensitivity.
They keep to the back of the church, watch dawns over the misty valley, and struggle with cold, boredom, and baloney. By the fifth day, Ponyboy is sick from smoking on an empty stomach. A familiar whistle announces Dallas, whose arrival reconnects them to the outside world.
Dally gives Ponyboy a letter from Sodapop, describing the family’s fear and Darry’s remorse. He drives them to a Dairy Queen, where they eat ravenously. Dally explains that the city has erupted into all-out Soc–Greaser fights since Bob’s death; he carries an unloaded heater for bluff.
Dally outlines a planned rumble at the vacant lot to decide territory, noting Two-Bit’s recent jump and Tim Shepard’s involvement. He reveals a surprising turn: Cherry Valance is acting as a spy for the Greasers.
