Chapter 8

Overview

Ponyboy and Two-Bit visit the hospital, where Johnny, fearing death and paralysis, refuses to see his mother. Dally, restless and enraged, arms himself and insists the Greasers must win the rumble for Johnny.

Later, Cherry confirms the no-weapons rules and Randy’s absence, but cannot face Johnny; Ponyboy and Cherry reach a fragile truce.

Summary

Ponyboy and Two-Bit push past hospital restrictions to see Johnny after a doctor allows it, noting Johnny has been asking for them. Johnny, gravely injured and exhausted, asks for hair grease and a copy of Gone with the Wind, and quietly absorbs news of the upcoming rumble.

As pain surges, Johnny admits he can’t feel below mid-back and fears he will never walk again. He confesses he’s terrified of dying at sixteen, mourning the life he hasn’t lived. When a nurse announces his mother’s arrival, Johnny angrily refuses to see her, then faints from the strain.

Shaken, Ponyboy and Two-Bit encounter Johnny’s bitter mother in the hall and hurry away to visit Dally. Dally, chafing under hospital rules, masks worry with bravado, then hardens when he hears Johnny passed out. He borrows Two-Bit’s treasured switchblade and vows the Greasers must win the rumble for Johnny.

On the way home, Ponyboy shows feverish signs but begs Two-Bit not to tell Darry. Uneasy about the fight, Ponyboy voices dread that something unstoppable is coming; Two-Bit brushes it off, insisting confidence will make it so.

They meet Cherry by the vacant lot. She relays that the Socs will follow Greaser rules—no weapons—and that Randy won’t attend. Cherry cannot visit Johnny because he killed Bob, despite acknowledging Bob’s darker, drunken side. Ponyboy lashes out over class divides, then softens, connecting with Cherry over the shared sunset and leaving on a tentative note of understanding.
