Chapter 2
Overview
Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally sneak into the Nightly Double, where Dally harasses two Soc girls, Cherry and Marcia, until Johnny intervenes. Two-Bit joins, and tensions between gangs surface. Ponyboy recounts Johnny’s brutal beating by Socs, and Cherry concedes that wealth doesn’t spare pain—“things are rough all over.”
Summary
Ponyboy and Johnny meet Dally and roam greaser hangouts before sneaking into the Nightly Double drive-in. Dally targets two Soc girls, Cherry Valance and Marcia, with crude talk. When Cherry resists and throws a Coke in his face, Johnny—despite idolizing Dally—orders Dally to leave her alone, and Dally backs off.
With Dally gone, Ponyboy and Johnny sit with the girls. Two-Bit appears, jokes with Marcia, and updates them that Tim Shepard is after Dally for slashing tires, prompting a discussion about what counts as a fair fight among greasers versus Socs. The girls observe the greasers’ code and violence with wary curiosity.
Cherry asks Ponyboy to get popcorn, and at the concession stand she probes Johnny’s fear. Ponyboy explains the pivotal trauma: months earlier, Socs in a blue Mustang nearly beat Johnny to death, leaving lasting scars and terror. Cherry insists not all Socs are like that and argues that wealth hides different burdens.
Ponyboy accepts Cherry’s point even as the class divide remains stark. They return to the movie; Marcia and Two-Bit hit it off, while Ponyboy, Johnny, and Cherry sit quietly, the new understanding between Soc and greaser complicating old assumptions.
