1: Chris

At 5:15 a.m., Chris is woken by a call from his best friend, Mike, who begs him to drive Larissa and her mother, Nancy, to the hospital for Nancy’s surgery. Irritated and exhausted on his day off, Chris reluctantly agrees, frustrated that Mike is too hungover to follow through.

Chris arrives at Larissa’s run-down apartment complex and meets a wary, sleep-deprived Larissa and her anxious mother. Mike hasn’t told them about the change, so Chris explains and takes Nancy’s bag. Seeing they’ve been crying, he keeps details to himself and focuses on getting them to the hospital.

During the drive, Nancy’s chatty, intrusive questions embarrass Larissa and highlight family tension. Chris senses Larissa is near tears and deflects with a comedy podcast to ease the mood. The ride underscores Chris’s quiet decency in contrast to Mike’s unreliability.

At the hospital drop-off, Chris offers to stay, per Mike’s request, but Larissa declines, insisting she’s fine and will arrange a ride back. Chris hesitates, uneasy about leaving her alone during Nancy’s surgery, yet decides not to impose.

As Chris pulls away, he realizes Nancy’s duffel is still in his trunk. Without Larissa’s number, he parks and goes inside to return it, inadvertently remaining part of their difficult morning.
