Chapter Sixteen

Amid the harbor catastrophe, Lore perceives a suspended moment where Spiritum bleeds from bodies and Mortem moves in to claim them. She seizes the fleeing Spiritum, runs it through herself to bind it with intention, and returns it to its owners, stalling deaths. For those already tipping into Mortem, she channels Mortem through her body and sends it back changed as Spiritum, restoring life instead of raising corpses.

A vast, deliberate surge of Mortem rises from beneath Dellaire, flooding toward Lore like a homecoming. She becomes a living reservoir, containing the torrent without dying, and gradually sound and color return: the wounded cry out, but everyone is alive. Bastian, radiant with Spiritum, reaches her as she collapses, and later Lore wakes marked with a charcoal star spreading from each palm.

In Lore’s rooms, Malcolm, Alie, Gabe, and Bastian debate the bombing. Malcolm insists it required an insider; Alie points to Kirythea; rumors swirl in the city, some calling it divine favor. Gabe pointedly asks if Bastian orchestrated the blast as a power play. Bastian erupts; the two trade blows until Lore forces a stop. Bastian heals Gabe’s nose and his own bruise with Spiritum, leaving blood on the wallpaper as the only trace.

Bastian announces he has already arrested the Kirythean delegates for questioning. Alie condemns the rash, incendiary move and demands access to smooth diplomacy. Bastian remains unmoved, confident the debris analysis will clarify blame while courtly rumor credits Lore’s miracle.

A Presque Mort, Marie, bursts in from the garden wells: the Mortem flow is gone. The routine eclipse draw yields nothing. All eyes land on Lore’s altered hands as Marie declares that all the Mortem has vanished, turning a political crisis into a profound magical upheaval.
