Chapter Three

Overview

Lore confronts her estranged mother, the Night Priestess Lilia, who reveals a summoning call is awakening others and urges Lore to flee to weaken their convergence. Lilia offers covert aid via a rose dropped into the well. Gabe interrupts; Lore conceals Lilia and shares a tense, tentative exchange with him before returning to the Citadel, unsettled.

Summary

In the Presque Mort garden at night, Lore encounters her haggard mother, the Night Priestess. Expecting coercion, Lore accuses her of failed prophecies and attempted sacrifice. Lilia instead urges Lore to flee, claiming a call has gone out that will draw awakened powers together, intensifying danger if Lore stays.

Lore challenges Lilia for abandoning her and nearly killing her for belief in a doubtful god. Lilia accepts blame, reveals her name, and insists her actions had reasons, though not asking forgiveness. Before departing, Lilia offers a covert aid: if Lore drops a rose into the well, Lilia will help her escape.

Gabe approaches with a lantern, forcing Lilia to vanish down the well. Lore conceals her mother’s presence. Gabe and Lore navigate a brittle conversation about her living in Bastian’s quarters, her wellbeing, and court life, with Gabe asking if Bastian treats her well and Lore answering honestly but noncommittally about their relationship.

Gabe apologizes for choices that hurt Lore while not conceding they were wrong; Lore acknowledges everyone acted as they thought best without granting forgiveness. The moment closes without resolution. Lore returns through the Citadel, still feeling the pull toward the catacombs, but finally falls into a dreamless sleep.
