Chapter Twelve

Overview

Lore confronts Bastian about his public glow; he admits channeling Spiritum and refuses to slow down despite risks. He assigns her a constant guard and leaves to manage finances. Lore, shaken, consults Alie, who questions Bastian’s impulsive choices and hints the council may intervene. Outside Alie’s rooms, Kirythean envoy Caius pointedly seeks Alie’s company, underscoring rising political tension, and Alie urges Lore to see Gabe.

Summary

After First Day services, Lore confronts Bastian about his radiance. Bastian casually admits he channeled Spiritum to amplify his aura, calling it a useful display for the Kirytheans. Lore warns about unknown consequences of channeling and suggests finding Anton; Bastian doubts Anton lives, and Lore proposes asking Gabe.

When Lore urges a pause in magic, Bastian, strained but resolute, refuses, blaming royal pressures. He departs to deal with treasurers and leaves without addressing her concerns. Lore plans to seek Gabe for lessons and answers.

Outside their chambers, Lore discovers a bloodcoat guard assigned to shadow her by Bastian’s order. Angry but outmaneuvered, she allows him to follow. She runs into Alie and, via a clumsy ruse about “monthly pains,” gets a moment of privacy in Alie’s apartments.

Inside, Alie challenges Lore about accepting Bastian’s surprise proposal. Lore explains the political bind and admits worry over Bastian’s rash choices—inviting Kirytheans, excessive channeling, and sudden engagement. Alie argues stress and Bastian’s temperament may explain it but hints the council is considering options, telling Lore she need not act.

As they exit, Kirythean envoy Caius arrives, all charm and predatory interest, asking Alie to walk in the gardens. Lore deflects, and Caius pointedly congratulates Lore on her future queenship before leaving. Shaken, Alie tells Lore to go see Gabe and closes her door.
