Chapter Nine
Overview
At the ball, tensions simmer as Alie engages Caius and Amelia Devereaux reveals quiet resentment. Bastian defends sparing Amelia, citing Spiritum-guided intuition. Gabe arrives to witness Bastian’s public proposal to Lore. Lore accepts, formalizing a powerful alliance while deepening the emotional rift with Gabe and reframing court dynamics.
Summary
During the coronation ball, Bastian refuses to dance so he and Lore can project severity from their rose-draped dais. Lore spots Alie conversing calmly with Caius, which unsettles her, but Bastian urges patience and observation. Lord Demonde and his new wife, Amelia Devereaux, approach; Amelia’s veiled hostility toward Lore is evident.
Bastian pointedly recalls Amelia’s family’s treason and notes he spared her exile after her oath and tears, admitting an intuition—perhaps Spiritum—guided his leniency. Lore questions ruling by intuition; Bastian counters that both their powers sometimes nudge them, as with Lore’s awakening sense in the vaults.
Gabe arrives, stormlike and unsmiling, bearing the Bleeding God’s Heart. With the court watching, Bastian stands, explains the need for Church witness, and kneels to propose to Lore. Shock ripples through the hall; Alie, Brigitte, and others freeze as the quartet falters.
Bastian quietly frames their union as destined, seeking Lore’s acknowledgment. After a tense beat, Lore, moved by their charged bond and the inevitability she feels, nods. Bastian presents a braided gold-and-silver ring and formally asks her to become Queen of Auverraine; Lore says yes.
Bastian slides on the ring and kisses her as the room erupts into cheers. Lore meets Gabe’s gaze over Bastian’s shoulder; Gabe, flushed and stunned, lifts a hand involuntarily, then turns and leaves the hall. The triangle’s strain sharpens even as the political stakes of Lore’s acceptance lock into place.
