Chapter Eleven
Overview
Lore and Bastian attend First Day prayers led by Gabe, where Bastian manifests a golden radiance and calls Lore “Beloved,” awing the court. Gabe abruptly ends the rite and leaves, wounded by the display. Bastian then publicly introduces Kirythean delegates, signaling a risky push toward coexistence amid mounting unease and his worsening headaches.
Summary
Before dawn, Lore prepares to attend First Day prayers, intending to check on Gabe and weigh Amelia’s cryptic accusation. Bastian arrives unexpectedly, dressed formally and nursing a headache. He shows a moment of vulnerability about Gabe’s feelings, then escorts Lore to the North Sanctuary for their first public appearance since the betrothal.
Gabe uneasily conducts the rite, his presence stark against memory of Anton. As incense curls and the congregation kneels, Bastian begins to glow with a golden luminescence. He takes Lore’s hand, and for an instant appears overlaid with another form, murmuring “Beloved,” which leaves the court awed and tearful before the radiance fades.
Bastian quips about “showing off,” while Caius and Maxon watch from the rear, their faces mixing awe and anger. Gabe, visibly hurt, rushes the conclusion of prayers and leaves the dais. Bastian seizes the moment, steadying himself through lingering pain, and addresses the court.
He introduces Maxon Agripolus and Caius Sentia as delegates from Emperor Jax, urging the court to accept a new era of coexistence. The sanctuary simmers with silent dissent; Malcolm looks wary. Highlighting the clergy’s absence, Bastian dismisses the gathering and departs with Lore, claiming it went well even as his headache surges back.
