Chapter Twelve: For the First Time
Overview
Zetian and Li Shimin awaken after their catastrophic sortie, realizing both survived the lethal mind clash. Instead of finishing each other, they recognize the impossibility of their survival and tentatively connect. This moment shifts their dynamic from mortal enemies to uneasy partners, opening the door to cooperation.
Summary
Zetian regains consciousness in the Vermilion Bird cockpit, disoriented and bleeding from the nose. The sensory details—metallic smell, foggy light through damaged speaker holes—confirm the battle’s aftermath. She realizes her hands are free of the armor bindings and, against all expectation after their lethal mental struggle, she is alive.
Chains clatter as Li Shimin moves behind her, also emerging from the armor. Zetian, unsure if the battle ended or if one of them should have died, calls out. Li Shimin stops, then slowly turns, his expression shifting from shock to raw relief as he recognizes that Zetian is still alive and speaking.
Confronted with the reality that neither killed the other, Zetian studies Li Shimin’s unguarded emotion, recalling the violence within his mind yet unable to look away. On impulse, she extends her hand. Li Shimin takes it, their fingers interlacing gently—an unspoken acknowledgment of survival and the first tentative step toward cooperation instead of mutual destruction.
