Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Strongest Shape
Overview
Zetian and Li Shimin are forced into battle in the Vermilion Bird, struggling with low qi and control. Zetian ejects their armed overseers, cripples the Headless Warrior, and kills Xing Tian. Gao Yizhi arrives and channels qi, enabling a full mind-sync and a higher humanoid transformation that turns the tide. After routing the noble Hunduns, Zetian’s qi drains and she collapses, leaving their fate uncertain.
Summary
Under threat from An Lushan’s command and soldiers’ guns, Zetian and Li Shimin launch the undercharged Vermilion Bird into a stormy battle near the Great Wall. They fend off Hunduns with sluggish qi blasts, struggling to coordinate. When Zetian spots the Headless Warrior, terror hardens into defiance; she overpowers Shimin’s control long enough to eject their two armed overseers from the cockpit.
Zetian ambushes the Headless Warrior to kill Xing Tian but hesitates to avoid killing his concubine pilot. Shimin’s rage surges to finish the kill, and Zetian stops him with the reminder of “killed enough girls.” Together they pivot: using the Vermilion Bird’s Villainous Form, they rip off the Warrior’s legs, causing catastrophic feedback. Xing Tian’s qi fades and the Warrior is permanently disabled.
Riding this momentum, Zetian turns the Bird toward the Kaihuang watchtower to obliterate it and everyone complicit in their abuse. Gao Yizhi’s voice halts her; he reaches the Wall and offers qi through his hand. Using Metal precision, Zetian needles his acupuncture points, drawing a living stream of Earth qi (with traces of Wood) into the Bird.
Yizhi’s qi stabilizes them, and in the mind link Zetian and Shimin fully merge, becoming one will with the Vermilion Bird. The Chrysalis transforms into a humanoid, winged form highlighted by Metal-white and Earth-yellow. They tether Yizhi, bring him into the cockpit to tend Zetian’s wound, then leap back into the fray.
Now synchronized, they manifest a giant spirit longbow from their breastplate and surgically snipe noble-class Hunduns from the air, preserving salvageable husks and breaking the enemy lines. As the field quiets, Zetian suddenly loses control; her Metal qi bleeds away. Voices call to her as she drifts into a cold, peaceful blackout.
