Chapter Forty-Five: Who Am I?

Zetian awakens underwater, freezing and trapped beneath unbreakable ice while egui claw at her and drag her down. A boy blazing with molten lines—Li Shimin—dives to her, melts an opening, and hauls her onto the ice as the red sky burns above. Pursued by legions of egui, he carries her until a flash of remembered motion turns their flight into synchronized skating.

As they speed toward a shoreline, another swarm blocks the way. Trusting Li Shimin, Zetian plunges through with him. Cradled against his searing chest, she is urged to remember. Memories surge back—poverty and study, imprisonment, combat, Ruyi’s death, the Chrysalis, the docking bridge where she met Li Shimin, their battles, and her consuming hatred and purpose—reassembling her identity.

They reach the steps of a Great Wall-like structure. A red 0 flares in Zetian’s mind as Li Shimin’s qi-meridian cracks glow too hot. He collapses, tells Zetian she is the Iron Widow, and that he now lives within her. Despite her pleas, he kisses her goodbye and disintegrates into ash, leaving a single charred butterfly with yin and yang wings.

Haunted voices—Shimin’s, Big Sister’s, Yizhi’s, and generations of silenced girls—urge Zetian to be the oppressor’s nightmare. Refusing to yield to the realm and its egui, she forces herself onward, ascends to the highest point, and discovers Qin Zheng seated on a throne. Startled, he acknowledges the novelty of her arrival, setting the stage for their confrontation.
