Chapter Thirty-Two

At dinner, Alastir reveals that Casteel was long expected to marry a wolven, shocking Poppy, who feels betrayed. Casteel counters that he never took such an oath, arguing the expectation came from his father’s plans. Jasper, the silver-haired wolven and Kieran’s father, arrives as tensions rise, and Dante voices distrust of Poppy.

Poppy rejects being labeled an Ascended loyalist, publicly recounting her captivity as the Maiden and the Ascended’s intent to use her blood. Casteel admits he initially planned to use Poppy as ransom but says his feelings changed and he fell in love. Poppy partially confirms their history, including stabbing him when she learned the truth, and asserts their relationship is real. Jasper signals conditional acceptance; some remain hostile.

Overwhelmed by the room’s emotions, Poppy leaves. Outside, Casteel apologizes for his people’s behavior and wants to talk; she refuses. Kieran arrives, says Jasper wants Casteel, and escorts Poppy to her room. On the way, Kieran explains Jasper’s role leading the wolven and their family’s ages, underscoring the wolven’s long lives.

Alone, Poppy discovers her door isn’t locked, realizing she is no longer caged. She breaks down, then resolves that she has shed the Maiden’s silence. She acknowledges she loves Casteel despite past lies and withheld truths, yet decides to continue their plan for her brother, Atlantia, and Solis.

Poppy prepares for bed, still armed, and drifts to sleep. She wakes as someone—Casteel—slips into the bed, teasing about whether she will stab him again.
