Chapter Eleven
Overview
Poppy steels herself for a political marriage to Casteel and worries about faking love. Over breakfast, Casteel publicly announces their engagement, staging intimacy to sway skeptics like Alastir. Questioned about their origins, Poppy and Casteel admit meeting at the Red Pearl and as guard and charge.
Poppy defends the people of Solis, reveals her captivity, and earns some respect. Alastir remains wary but intrigued, testing whether Casteel truly intends to keep her.
Summary
Poppy wakes anxious about her agreement to marry Casteel as a strategic alliance: to reach Ian, free Malik, and potentially end looming war. She worries about faking a loving relationship without losing herself, and about convincing others after publicly rejecting him.
Kieran arrives with breakfast and travel updates; Alastir will scout roads east as the storm lifts. He teases Poppy about becoming a princess and hints at his bond with Casteel, confirming wolven bonds to Atlantian elemental bloodlines. As Casteel enters with Alastir and others, Poppy fights panic over the impending announcement.
At the table, Casteel takes Poppy’s hand, urges composure, and adopts a princely mask. Alastir challenges the sudden engagement and Poppy’s past as the Maiden; Casteel insists the past is irrelevant to what others must believe. Casteel seats Poppy in his lap, publicly apologizes for a botched proposal, and admits she initially refused—and threw a knife at him—then promises a proper ring.
Alastir probes how they met. Casteel reveals their first encounter at the Red Pearl and later as her guard, while Poppy clarifies the Red Pearl’s mixed nature. Discussion shifts to Solis: Poppy argues its people are indoctrinated, fearful, and focused on survival, deserving empathy rather than contempt. She challenges Atlantian assumptions about faith and gods; Kieran concedes Atlantians believe despite the gods’ long sleep.
Poppy’s fearless candor impresses Alastir; when she quietly reads his emotions, she senses sadness rather than hostility. She details her isolation and confinement as the Maiden and admits to risky nightly escapes. The table reacts with shock. As tension eases, Alastir pointedly asks if Casteel truly intends to keep her, leaving the question hanging and the political stakes clear.
