Chapter Thirty-Six

In the aftermath of Casteel’s dawn confessions, Poppy reveals she chose him first as Hawke and kept choosing him as Casteel, despite anger and guilt over Vikter, Rylan, and others. She admits terror at being hurt again and the stakes beyond them, yet acknowledges her feelings are stronger than her fears.

Casteel kneels, promising to protect Poppy’s heart. At his plea, Poppy opens her empathic tether and tastes his emotions—concern and sadness tempered by a sweet, decadent feeling she recognizes as love. Assured by this, they agree not to “borrow tomorrow’s problems” and to take their relationship day by day.

Casteel proposes marriage “today,” and Poppy accepts. The decision brings Poppy unexpected relief and happiness, even as she remains aware of the encroaching Ascended and the uncertain reception from Casteel’s parents and people.

Vonetta arrives with a red gown and a diamond necklace, explaining Atlantian traditions: red or yellow veils to ward off ill will, diamonds as the gods’ joyous tears, and outdoor, barefoot ceremonies upon Atlantian soil. They discuss the rarely practiced Joining, noting it has never involved someone of mortal blood. Vonetta encourages Poppy to claim joy despite looming conflict.

Poppy reflects on Tawny, the lies of the Ascended, and the likely siege, but resolves not to let fear steal the day. As they prepare to head outside for the brief ceremony officiated by Vonetta’s father, Poppy straps on her wolven dagger to honor Vikter, determined and hopeful as she goes to marry Casteel.
