Chapter Twenty-Five
Overview
Poppy grapples with the Joining and learns Alastir was King Malec’s bonded wolven who broke his oath by exposing Malec’s Ascension of Isbeth. Casteel apologizes and clarifies the Joining’s risks and purpose. Confronting his starvation and bloodlust, Poppy offers her blood. Casteel accepts on the condition someone supervises.
Summary
Poppy fixates on the Joining after Alastir’s hints and, embarrassed, wonders if Atlantia would expect it of her with Casteel and Kieran. When she questions tradition, Alastir reveals mortals must carry Atlantian blood for lifespan extension and shares a staggering truth: he was King Malec’s bonded wolven and broke his oath by informing the Queen that Malec Ascended Isbeth.
Later, after bathing and reflecting on Casteel’s past with Shea and her own feelings, Poppy is found by Casteel. He apologizes for losing control earlier and thanks her for reaching him. When Poppy asks why he rejects the title “Maiden,” Casteel says it’s to protect and redefine her.
Poppy raises the Joining again. Casteel laughs at Alastir’s prudish framing, explains it’s an intimate bond not always sexual, and notes the grave risk: a wolven and the bonded partner can die if the other does. They briefly discuss Alastir’s broken oath and its rare severing of a bond.
Turning to Casteel’s starvation, Poppy presses for the truth about what happens if he tips into bloodlust. Casteel describes a violent, near-irreversible madness he endured in captivity when the Ascended withheld blood. Poppy insists he feed, offering her blood despite past hurts, admitting she cares and won’t risk him spiraling.
Moved, Casteel agrees on one condition: he won’t feed alone, fearing he could take too much after going so long without blood. Poppy consents to a witness, setting terms for his feeding and deepening their fragile trust.
