Chapter 11
Overview
Alex wakes at Il Bastone and learns from Dawes that the Sterling Gauntlet requires four murderers to enter hell, with fatal stakes if they fail. Michelle Alameddine warns the rite demands actual death and refuses to help. Alex then tells Mercy the truth about Lethe and Blake’s death under Sandow’s compulsion. Alex commits to rescuing Darlington—or stopping the demon he has become.
Summary
Alex wakes in Il Bastone feeling oddly soothed, finds Dawes’s elaborate breakfast and a message: meet at Sterling at noon. Dawes texts that the Gauntlet requires four murderers to activate and warns that a misstep could be fatal and irreversible. Alex accepts the stakes, vowing to save Darlington—and, if necessary, stop the demon.
Back at JE, Alex meets Michelle Alameddine. Michelle admits Anselm contacted her, refuses operational details, and cautions Alex about the cost. She confirms that the Gauntlet is not a simple portal: four pilgrims are required, and crossing demands actual death. Michelle, a suicide attempt survivor, warns of ravenous forces beyond the Veil and urges Alex to read Kittscher’s Daemonologie. She will not participate.
Michelle shows Alex a plaque tying the sculpture garden’s towers to George Douglas Miller and his dead child, underlining Darlington’s fascination with Yale’s hidden histories. A small Gray child perched nearby claims the name on the plaque, but Alex ignores him.
Returning upstairs, Alex levels with Mercy. She discloses Lethe, Darlington’s fate, and last year’s events. Alex recounts Blake’s break-in, how he beat her under Dean Sandow’s coin of compulsion, and how Dawes killed him with a marble bust during the struggle. Mercy admits she’s glad Blake died afraid and struggles with persistent anger. She asks Alex not to lie again; Alex promises to try.
