Chapter 28
Overview
Dragged back from the Gauntlet by Michael Anselm, the group is separated as Mercy and Tripp are sent home. Anselm scolds the team, fires Turner as Centurion, and formally bans Alex and Dawes from all Lethe resources. Alex and Dawes refuse contrition and walk away, jeopardizing any sanctioned rescue of Darlington.
Summary
Alex regains consciousness in the rain, disoriented from the failed Gauntlet return and reeling from visions of wolves and blue fire. She confirms Mercy, Dawes, Turner, and Tripp are alive, only to find Michael Anselm waiting, furious, and ordering them inside.
Stripped of muddy shoes and marched through the dim library, the group is pushed out to York Street. Anselm dispatches Tripp with cab fare and forces Mercy to surrender the borrowed salt armor. Mercy and Tripp leave, while Alex, Dawes, and Turner remain to face judgment.
Anselm condemns their unsanctioned ritual and the secrecy around the Gauntlet. Dawes admits they found Darlington, and Turner argues they would have succeeded if not interrupted. In response, Anselm summarily relieves Turner of his Centurion role. Turner exits, asserting Alex and Dawes are the only ones willing to fight.
Reeling with guilt and anger, Alex spars verbally with Anselm, who bars both her and Dawes from all Lethe properties, accounts, and artifacts, warning any future use will be treated as criminal acts. Alex tries to spare Dawes, but Anselm refuses leniency.
When Anselm accuses Alex of deceit and unfitness for Lethe, Dawes defends Alex and their mission to save Darlington. Rejecting Anselm’s rules as hollow, Dawes urges departure. Alex gives a final gesture of defiance and leaves with Dawes, exiled from Lethe and their sanctuaries.
