Chapter 29

Overview

Reeling from the failed descent, Alex plans another attempt while Dawes monitors Black Elm’s weakening protections. Alex confronts Michelle and learns she lied about her job, deepening suspicion about the campus murders. In class, Alex is lured by a demon wearing Hellie’s face, defeats it with salt and a Gray’s aid, and races to regroup the team at Il Bastone.

Summary

Alex wakes exhausted and freezing after the disastrous Gauntlet, recalling nightmares of Darlington and past losses. Dawes refuses to stay with Alex and Mercy, choosing to check Black Elm alone; she later reports the circle looks wrong. Alex and Mercy discuss hellfire aftereffects and the possibility of a second descent, aware the weakening circle may force their timing.

Grappling with likely expulsion, Alex texts the group to check in while Dawes offers to cook and Tripp and Turner report in. In Shakespeare lecture, Alex is intercepted by Michelle, whose evasive answers raise alarms. Afterward, Turner confirms Michelle never worked at the Butler, exposing a significant lie and deepening Alex’s suspicion that Michelle is connected to the recent deaths.

In class, distracted and clinging to the life she’s built at Yale, Alex spots a blond girl who looks exactly like Hellie. Mercy sees her too, proving it’s not a Gray. Alex follows the girl to the Bones courtyard, where “Hellie” is warm and alive-seeming, begging for drugs and insisting they wait for Len, twisting blame and guilt until Alex is overwhelmed.

The encounter turns violent as “Hellie” feeds on Alex’s shame and grief, trying to crush her will. Realizing the thing is a demon nourished by base emotion, Alex uses her remaining salt pearls and summons the little boy Gray to enter her, gaining strength. She smashes salt into the demon’s forehead, melting it back, and escapes.

Panting and terrified, Alex calls Mercy to stay put and orders Dawes to gather Turner and Tripp at Il Bastone despite Anselm’s ban. Convinced something crossed back with them from hell, Alex runs for the safety of the house and its library, preparing to regroup and counter whatever has followed her.
