Chapter 31
Overview
Alex, Dawes, Turner, Mercy, and Tripp brew a guardian spell in Hiram’s Crucible, each receiving a living talisman. The demons retaliate by setting Il Bastone ablaze, but Alex’s serpent ward and Turner’s oak roots drive them off. With the Praetor on scene and Anselm absent, they plan a full-moon return to hell and Alex vows to defend Il Bastone.
Summary
Recovering over soup, Alex, Dawes, Turner, Mercy, and Tripp inventory Lethe stores to attempt a protection working Mercy found. In Hiram’s Crucible, Dawes heats eternal coals and mixes salts, herbs, and stones, insisting on a steady rhythm. The crucible erupts into ash, revealing salt talismans that awaken into living guardians.
Each ward bonds to its bearer: a serpent coils into Alex, an albatross into Tripp, a slow loris into Dawes, and a mighty oak into Turner. Mercy receives a winged horse, and a final figure—Cosmo the cat—appears for absent Darlington. Dawes explains the guardians should answer to need, and they target a full-moon attempt to reopen the door, expecting the demons to change the game.
Smoke interrupts their planning. Outside, demons have ignited Il Bastone’s hedges and columns to flush them out. While Turner attacks the blaze with an extinguisher, Alex confronts the Hellie-figure, activating her serpent ward by licking her wrist. Serpents flare from her shadow, striking the demon and forcing the attackers to retreat.
Turner’s oak roots surge, flattening and smothering the fire, then withdraw as sirens approach. Weighing exposure and Anselm’s recent sanctions, Alex sends Mercy and Tripp out the back while Turner stays to manage firefighters and police. Professor Walsh-Whiteley arrives; Anselm is conspicuously absent.
Regrouping in the alley, they keep their presence quiet, confirm the house is scarred but standing, and accept Turner’s cover story. Uneasy about Anselm and the demons’ return, they commit to a full-moon descent and to sealing the portal for good. Alex lays a hand on Il Bastone’s stone and claims it as her home to defend.
