Overview

Alchemy of Secrets follows Holland St. James, a folklore graduate student whose academic obsession with Los Angeles myths becomes dangerously personal. Drawn first into the secretive Folklore 517 and then into rumors of the Watch Man, devil bargains, haunted hotels, hidden banks, and impossible objects, Holland begins to suspect that the stories her professor taught were never merely stories.

Holland’s search is shaped by her hidden family history, her bond with her twin sister January, and the legacy of her famous parents, filmmaker Benjamin J. Tierney and actress Isla Saint. As allies and strangers pull her in competing directions, she must decide whom to trust while pursuing the mysterious Alchemical Heart, an object everyone seems to want and no one fully understands.

The novel blends Hollywood folklore, secret societies, time magic, family grief, and cinematic treasure-hunt clues into a story about power, temptation, memory, and the cost of trying to rewrite what has been lost.

Plot Summary ⚠️ Spoilers

Holland St. James first enters the hidden world through Folklore 517, a secret class held in uncanny Los Angeles locations by a mysterious silver-haired Professor. The lessons present urban myths as if they might be real: the Watch Man can tell people when they will die; the devil trades favors in Hollywood; an impenetrable Bank guards impossible things; and the Alchemical Heart, the most powerful magical object in the world, reappears according to a strange cycle of dates. Holland, a folklore graduate student, is already drawn to such stories because her late father, filmmaker Benjamin J. Tierney, raised her and her twin January on elaborate treasure hunts before he and Holland’s mother, actress Isla Saint, died in a notorious tragedy.

Holland’s curiosity becomes dangerous after a date with Jake leads her to Curios & Clockwork, where both of them request contact with the Watch Man. Soon after, Holland is visited by Manuel Vargas, who claims a fifteen-year-old safety deposit box tied to her past is about to be destroyed. Meanwhile, Professor Adam Bishop replaces the Professor as Holland’s thesis adviser, denounces her mentor, and rejects Holland’s thesis about devil-linked Hollywood deaths. Holland, desperate to prove the myths and clear her mother’s name, schedules the Bank appointment.

The Watch Man’s reality is confirmed when Jake panics, saying he has been told he will die at 6:47 p.m. unless he kills Holland. Jake confesses his name is false and that he was hired to infiltrate Holland’s life for information about her family. Holland escapes, then finds Jake dead at the predicted time. A black-and-gold dossier reveals his assignment. The Watch Man calls Holland next and predicts her death on Halloween at 11:59 p.m. unless she finds the Alchemical Heart.

As police close in, Holland is intercepted by Gabriel Cabral, a dangerous fixer who claims January sent him to keep Holland alive. Gabe shows Holland a note in January’s handwriting and explains that January has become entangled with suspicious forces. He also tells Holland about the Sacred Order of the Parallel Dawn, the Alchemical Heart’s legendary origins, and the factions seeking to control or destroy it. Holland and Gabe search the Professor’s ransacked home for clues, but Adam appears, claiming January sent him too. A gunfight follows; Adam is shot near the heart, Gabe is wounded, and Holland flees with Gabe.

At Holland’s home, she opens a package from the Professor and finds a red journal marked with the Alchemical Heart’s symbol. The journal’s dates convince Holland that her father found the Heart in 2010 and hid it. When Bank letters surface in January’s room, Gabe warns that the Bank is evil. Holland later tells him about her appointment, and he explains the Bank’s rules: appointments offer temporary protection, but the Bank erases memories and hoards abilities. At the Bank, Holland is escorted by Padme, who reveals that January works there and that Adam is January’s partner, shaking Holland’s trust in Gabe.

Holland is taken first to the Manager, who is revealed to be the Professor. The Professor freezes time, admits she used Folklore 517 to recruit exceptional students, and offers Holland a Bank position and a powerful ability in exchange for whatever is in her father’s box. Holland refuses. The Professor warns that Gabe murdered his wife to steal her ability, further fracturing Holland’s trust. In the vault, Holland opens Benjamin’s box and finds not the Heart but his missing screenplay, Alchemy of Secrets, which contains clue scenes involving the Watch Man, the Source, and a trail only Holland can follow.

Holland escapes the Bank during a blackout with help from Eileen Cheng, who reveals her own Bank connection and modest ability. January’s motel key transforms into a golden key to the Regal, a time-dilated hotel. Inside, Holland finds Adam alive and healed. He protects her from Regal enforcers, binds her as his guest, and takes her to his penthouse. Adam admits he has influence, was sent by the Bank to recover, and was charged by January with keeping Holland alive. When Holland reveals the Watch Man’s deadline, Adam agrees to take her to him.

The Watch Man, living with Ernest at the Beverly Hills Hotel, tells Holland that Benjamin came from an old-magic family but was disowned after being predicted to die young. To gain more time, Benjamin was tasked with finding the Alchemical Heart and giving it to one of the devils, but he judged the Heart too dangerous and left Holland an envelope instead. The Watch Man also reveals that the “devil” is actually two brothers. Adam then confesses that he and his brother Mason once manufactured the devil legend to build influence. Mason murdered their father to inherit all abilities, and Adam later locked Mason’s powers and trapped him.

Using Benjamin’s screenplay clues, Holland and Adam decode a path through Jericho Monroe Entertainment. They investigate Benjamin’s old bungalow, learn he once loved Vic VanVleet, and find a props hold slip pointing to JME’s Property Department. Tom, a props worker who knew Ben, helps them trace a chained book to the Knife and Cross set. The book seems magical but proves to be a decoy containing only a yellow pencil. More pencil clues lead Holland and Adam to the My Neighbor Next Door set, where they dig beneath a tree marked with Benjamin and Isla’s initials and find a final bowling-alley clue. Gabe ambushes them, steals Holland’s satchel and pages, denies killing his wife, and warns her not to trust Adam.

Holland realizes the final clue points to the Hollywood Roosevelt. At the hotel’s Halloween party, Chance Garcia shows her photographs proving Adam has appeared unchanged across decades near several people later connected to mysterious tragedies, including Holland’s thesis subjects. In the bowling alley, Mason appears and reveals the central truth: the night is trapped in a time loop that resets after Holland’s death, and Holland’s nosebleeds and visions are memories from previous loops. Mason is a ghost outside time, which is why he remembers. He says Holland always dies before midnight, and Adam is always the one who kills her.

Holland searches January’s backpack and finds January’s sulfur necklace. When it fuses with Holland’s own, she thinks she has found the Alchemical Heart. Adam finds her, uses a compelling voice to control her, kisses her, stabs her, and steals the necklace. Mortally wounded and poisoned, Holland realizes the true Heart is the Professor’s journal. Guided by Mason, she commands it to keep her heart beating, stop the bleeding, and remove the poison, surviving past midnight and breaking the loop. She then pauses time and commands a trade: Adam becomes a harmless ghost bound to the Roosevelt, while Mason becomes human again.

The Alchemical Heart finally appears as Manuel Vargas and explains the costs of magic: resurrection disrupts balance, time reversal demands forgetting, and power always carries a price. Holland refuses to resurrect her parents, honoring her father’s warning to leave the dead in the past. Instead, she asks the Heart to activate her own dormant ability, though it will take time to manifest. To keep the Heart from those hunting it, she sends it into the future to someone kind who needs it, does not want it, and will use it only once.

Afterward, the Professor calmly confirms the Heart has vanished with the start of November and renews her offer of a Bank job. Holland declines a ride but leaves the offer open. At dawn on the beach, Holland savors time moving forward again. Mason finds her, acknowledges that he owes her a debt, warns her to keep her new ability secret, and leaves a black-and-gold business card behind. As he departs, January finally calls, opening the next stage of Holland’s life in the hidden world.

Themes

Alchemy of Secrets turns Hollywood folklore into a meditation on power, memory, and the stories people use to survive danger. Its central theme is the perilous seduction of hidden knowledge. Holland enters Folklore 517 because rumors promise access to secrets, but every revelation—the Watch Man’s prophecies, the Bank’s vaults, the Chained Library, the Regal Hotel—carries a cost. The Professor’s lessons repeatedly blur education and recruitment, showing how curiosity can become vulnerability when institutions weaponize mystery.

Another major theme is trust under conditions of manipulation. Nearly everyone around Holland is compromised: Jake is hired to study her, Gabe withholds truths about January and the Bank, Adam can alter memories, and the Professor is revealed as the Bank’s Manager. Holland’s shifting alliances dramatize the difficulty of moral judgment when charm, fear, attraction, and magic all distort perception. Her nosebleeds and recovered visions literalize this uncertainty: even her own memories cannot be fully trusted.

The novel also explores Hollywood as a machine of mythmaking. Ben Tierney’s films, Isla Saint’s stardom, the cursed productions, and the Roosevelt’s glamorous party all suggest that Los Angeles creates legends by mixing artifice with real enchantment. Movie sets, props, scripts, and costumes are not just nostalgic décor; they become maps, disguises, and containers of truth. Holland’s father hides the path to the Alchemical Heart inside screenplay pages, turning cinema into an inheritance and a puzzle of love.

Closely tied to this is family legacy and chosen agency. Holland spends the book chasing the truth about her parents’ deaths and January’s secrets, but the ending refuses simple restoration. When the Alchemical Heart offers the temptation to undo loss, Holland honors Ben’s warning to leave the dead in the past. Her choice to send the Heart forward to someone kind shows growth: she is no longer merely solving her father’s treasure hunt but making an ethical decision of her own.

Finally, the book is haunted by time, repetition, and consequence. Clocks, deadlines, frozen moments, the Regal’s time dilation, and the Halloween loop all insist that time is never neutral. Holland survives by learning that escaping the past does not mean erasing it; it means remembering enough to choose differently.
