Chapter Nine
Overview
Holland tries to flee after discovering Jake’s body, but her car is sabotaged by a suited stranger. He bears the same antiquity eye tattoo combination as January and claims she sent him to keep Holland alive. With police closing in and few options, Holland chooses the stranger’s car.
Summary
Holland flees the scene of Jake’s murder, haunted by the Professor’s clock-filled lessons on the Watch Man and the memory of synchronized alarms. She reaches the parking lot to find her car boxed in and unresponsive, despite her fob, as distant police activity grows closer.
A dark SUV blocks her escape. The driver, an impeccably dressed stranger, admits he disabled her car and insists she get in, warning it is either him, the police, or whoever killed Jake. He denies being the murderer but pushes urgency over trust.
Holland notices an indigo antiquity eye tattoo on the man’s wrist, marked with tin above and sulfur below—the same combination tied to January. He claims January asked him to keep Holland alive. This connection unsettles Holland, recalling their matching symbols and January’s reluctance about the tattoo.
The stranger promises not to touch her, saying he cannot protect her if she refuses to come. As footsteps and voices suggest the police are closing in, Holland weighs two bad choices: risk the cops’ questions and exposure, or accept help from a dangerous unknown.
Pressed by time and desperate for survival and answers about Jake’s killer and the Alchemical Heart, Holland gets into the SUV. The decision shifts her pursuit from running alone to relying on a dubious ally tied to her sister.
