Chapter Twenty-One
Overview
Holland suffers another late-night nosebleed and, while regrouping, discovers a hidden “Motor Hotel” key in January’s shoe. She links it to the Regal, a rumored time-dilated refuge, hinting at a potential lifeline. The chapter closes with Gabe insisting on close protection, and their bond deepening into cautious intimacy.
Summary
Holland snaps from a vision of Adam to find Gabe back, the beach house harshly bright, and blood on her hand from another nosebleed. Exhaustion and fear spike as she wonders if the Alchemical Heart is the only fix. Gabe tends to her briefly and questions the bleeding, while Holland withholds that it has happened repeatedly.
Seeking privacy, Holland retreats to a lemon-wallpapered bathroom, removes January’s backpack, and checks her shoe. A hidden sole releases a motel-style key tagged “Motor Hotel.” Remembering a journal entry about the Regal—a time-dilated, rule-bound hotel—she wonders if the key connects, recalling her father’s old advice to recognize when she already has what she needs.
Longing for reassurance she cannot have from her family, Holland showers and changes. The quiet of the house and the echo of pipes underscore her isolation and mounting desperation. She emerges to find Gabe, freshly showered and half-dressed, blocking her path, their proximity stirring conflicted attraction.
When Holland tries to leave, Gabe insists on staying with her, saying he won’t let her out of his sight. He pulls her onto the bed, holds her close, and, as he drifts toward sleep, keeps a protective arm around her. Holland, craving comfort and not wanting to feel alone, allows the intimacy and rests against him.
