Chapter Forty-Nine
Overview
Holland and Adam arrive at the Hollywood Roosevelt’s Clue-themed Halloween party to pursue the bowling-alley lead. After spotting Gabe, Adam breaks off to intercept him. Chance isolates Holland and reveals photos showing Adam unchanged across decades and adjacent to multiple later tragedies, casting grave doubt on Adam’s identity and intentions.
Summary
Holland dons her mother’s iconic Mirrorland dress, while Adam arrives costumed as Cross. They head to the Hollywood Roosevelt, determined to follow the bowling-alley clue despite dwindling time before Halloween ends.
Inside, a 1940s-styled butler hands out Clue cards, unsettling Holland with the suggestion of a murder in a room with a secret passage. The lobby is transformed into the conservatory, and the party’s energy is frenetic. Holland thinks she spots the Professor dressed as Mary Poppins, adding to her unease, while Adam drinks and scans for his brother Mason.
On the mezzanine, Holland sees Gabe—still in the clothes from JME—moving toward the bowling alley. Adam’s demeanor turns serious; he tells Holland to stay hidden while he intercepts Gabe, then disappears into the crowd.
Before Holland can follow, Chance—dressed as a romanticized pirate—grabs her and drags her into an elevator. He stops it between floors and warns that something is very wrong with Adam. Chance explains he took a job at JME to investigate what happened on The Magic Attic and has quietly collected photos and stories for months.
Chance shows Holland photographs from JME: Adam appears on the first day of The Magic Attic and in many other images, looking exactly the same. Disturbingly, each photo also includes someone later featured in Holland’s thesis—people who died tragically or mysteriously. Chance says there is one more photo from the set of Mirrorland, implying an even more damning connection, leaving Holland confronted with the possibility that Adam is tied to a pattern of death.
