Chapter Fifty-One
Overview
Holland follows Mason through a hidden door, where he reveals they are trapped in a time loop that resets after her death. He explains her nosebleeds and visions are memories from prior loops and that he is a ghost outside time. Mason demands the Alchemical Heart to revive him and kill Adam. He finally states the key truth: Adam is always the one who murders Holland before midnight.
Summary
Amid cheers in the gaming parlor, Mason warns Holland that Adam is coming and that the Alchemical Heart is not in the room. He urges her to follow him if she wants a real chance to survive. Holland slips with Mason through a hidden door by the bar into a tiny library as Adam approaches.
In the library, Mason claims they have had this conversation many times, but Holland never remembers. He explains that Holland’s nosebleeds and visions are side effects of a recurring time loop; time tries to move forward, and her “visions” are actually memories from previous timelines. When Holland bleeds, no vision follows, reinforcing Mason’s claim.
Mason demonstrates his nature by vanishing and reappearing like mist. Holland’s hand passes through him, and he admits he is a ghost who exists outside time, which is why he remembers the loops. He says Holland has died many times and that outcomes vary depending on whether she goes with Gabe and whom she betrays at the Bank, but she always dies before midnight and the night resets at 12:15 to Halloween Eve.
Mason proposes a bargain: if Holland finds the Alchemical Heart, he wants her to use it to make him alive again and to kill Adam. Holland refuses to promise murder. Mason then delivers the decisive reveal: regardless of path, Adam is always the one who kills Holland between leaving this room and midnight.
