Chapter Six
Overview
Holland confronts Jake before his prophesied death. He admits his name is fake and he was hired for a job targeting her, claiming he could buy time by killing her.
Holland escapes, calls Chance, and soon finds Jake dead, validating the Watch Man’s threat and escalating the danger to her.
Summary
Holland arrives at Jake’s apartment minutes before the foretold 6:47 p.m., torn between disproving the Professor’s sinister lore and fear it might be real. Jake looks haggard and warns her not to come inside, then breaks down.
Jake confesses “Jake” isn’t his real name and that he took a job involving Holland. He reveals the caller—the Watch Man or an accomplice—promised him more time if he killed Holland that night. Horrified, Holland yanks free and runs.
Barefoot and shaken, Holland calls Chance for help while trying to find her car in the darkened complex. Panic worsens as she retraces her steps and fears Jake is following.
Sprinklers erupt as Holland discovers a motionless body in a faded red USC shirt. She approaches and realizes it is Jake—now dead—confirming the 6:47 prediction and that someone truly wants her killed.
