Chapter Twenty-Three
Overview
Holland reaches the Bank’s hidden headquarters, experiencing undeniable proof of its magic. Gabe warns her about the Manager’s rumored mind reading and urges secrecy about him waiting outside. Their charged kiss deepens their bond as Holland steels herself to enter, raising stakes for both the heist and their alliance.
Summary
Holland and Gabe drive to Centennial City for Holland’s Bank appointment, arriving with unusual speed and no traffic. As they enter a neighborhood of impossible autumn color and retro cars, Holland senses pervasive magic akin to the feeling from Gabe’s coin.
They spot the Bank: a towering jade-green art deco building that seems newly visible despite its impossible size, reinforcing the sense of concealment by magic. The sight intensifies Holland’s anxiety about entering and retrieving the Alchemical Heart.
Before she goes, Gabe warns Holland to avoid the Bank’s secretive Manager, rumored to read minds. He cautions her not to think of him if they meet, or he may be unable to extract her. Overwhelmed, Holland doubts her readiness.
Gabe reassures her with a plan: call him once she’s leaving the vault and he will meet her immediately outside. As fear spikes, Gabe kisses Holland—tender yet hesitant—then pulls back, promising to be there when she exits.
