Chapter Fifty-Two
Overview
Holland realizes the Alchemical Heart is formed when her sulfur necklace fuses with January’s, creating a choker bearing the Heart’s symbol. As she tries to escape before midnight, Adam finds and compels her, then violently betrays her—stabbing her and stealing the Heart. The discovery and theft upend her last hope and escalate the mortal stakes.
Summary
Haunted by Mason’s warning and running out of time, Holland reconsiders her father’s note—“You already have everything you need”—and searches January’s backpack. A hidden compartment yields cash, a fake passport, and January’s sulfur necklace. When Holland puts it on, it fuses with her own, becoming a single choker with the Alchemical Heart symbol.
Believing she now carries the Heart, Holland plans a swift exit from the Roosevelt. As the party dwindles and midnight nears, Adam finds her on the stairs. With a flat gaze and a musical, compelling voice, Adam bends Holland’s will and leads her toward a shadowed corner of the lobby.
Under his influence, Holland focuses only on Adam as he kisses her and presses her against the wall. When his hand reaches her throat and the chain, a flicker of clarity returns—too late. Adam tightens his hold, murmurs a warning, and drives a blade into her back, inflicting excruciating pain.
Holland collapses, vision swimming. Adam, briefly looking sad, leaves her behind, carrying the bloodied Alchemical Heart. The chapter ends with Holland grievously wounded and the Heart stolen just before midnight.
