Chapter Forty-Seven

Overview

Holland and Adam dig beneath her parents’ carved initials at the yellow house and discover a jar holding her father’s encouragement and a final bowling-alley clue. Gabe ambushes them, forcing Holland into studio tunnels where he denies murdering his wife and warns against Adam. A bleeding vision overtakes them both, escalating the mystery and stakes.

Summary

Holland leads Adam to the yellow house with the swing and confirms a screenplay cue about rustling sycamore leaves. At the tree’s base, they spot carved initials B + I—her parents’—and decide it marks the dig site. Adam digs and strikes glass, uncovering a jar.

Inside, Holland finds a note from her father urging trust in her own judgment, plus a screenplay page: a bowling ball rolling toward pins that spell THE END. Holland reads it as the final clue.

Gabriel Cabral appears with a gun, demanding the scroll and training the weapon on Adam. Holland surrenders the scroll partway, then bolts, shouting for Adam to run the other direction. She races into the yellow house, finds a trapdoor in the kitchen, and descends into red-lit tunnels.

Gabe catches Holland in the corridor and insists he didn’t kill his wife, urging her not to trust Adam and claiming he needs—more than wants—the Heart. As he holds her, blood pools in his eyes and runs down his cheeks while he repeats that she keeps making the same mistake.

The scene warps: Gabe seems to become Adam, and then Holland feels blood pour from her own eyes, blurring fear, truth, and whatever the tunnels are revealing.
