Chapter Eighteen
Overview
Holland confronts Gabe about January’s secrets, but Gabe refuses to betray her. Searching January’s room, Holland discovers emerald letters from First Bank of Centennial City, one addressed to herself. Gabe brands the bank evil. When a car blocks the driveway, the immediate threat forces Gabe and Holland to flee.
Summary
After Chance leaves, Gabe dismisses him as untrustworthy. Holland withholds the Professor’s journal and demands answers about January, focusing on Gabe’s wrist tattoo and what January knows. Gabe refuses, citing loyalty to January, which heightens Holland’s frustration.
Holland goes to the guest room January uses and searches her things. She finds two thick emerald-green envelopes: one addressed to January (opened) and one to herself (sealed). Despite Gabe’s alarm, Holland opens her letter and sees it is from First Bank of Centennial City.
Gabe warns that the bank is evil and won’t touch the letter. Before they can discuss more, headlights flood the room; a car stops and blocks Gabe’s vehicle in the driveway. Sensing imminent danger, Gabe grabs Holland’s hand and urges they leave immediately.
