Chapter Eleven
Overview
Gabe outlines the Alchemical Heart’s origins with the Sacred Order of the Parallel Dawn and claims the Watch Man is always right about deaths. He warns of a group erasing the Heart from history and a deadly rumor list. Despite fatal odds, he agrees to take Holland to the Professor, demanding they flee on his word.
Summary
Shaken by Gabe’s belief that she will die, Holland wants reassurance, but Gabe insists the Watch Man is always right. Challenged on how he knows of the Watch Man, Gabe deflects, while Holland asserts her folklore knowledge and argues the Professor might help locate the Alchemical Heart.
Gabe calls the Heart a myth and describes the Sacred Order of the Parallel Dawn, an ancient society claiming a parallel world of magic. After a ritual return from death, a member brought back an object later known as the Alchemical Heart. Gabe says no one knows its form, but proximity grants abilities and contact imbues objects with magic that cannot be destroyed, only transferred—fracturing the Order over whether the Heart itself should be destroyed to erase all created magic.
Holland links this to her Professor’s lecture about the world’s most powerful object hidden in a chained library whose book was returned hollow. Gabe suggests the Professor avoided naming it because an organization erases the Heart from history and might kill anyone spreading specifics. He adds a rumor of a date list that lures seekers to their deaths.
Accepting the risks, Holland asks only to be dropped at the Professor’s home. Gabe questions her trust, then agrees to drive her, imposing a nonnegotiable condition: if he says they leave, they leave. Holland consents, while privately vowing not to get in a car with him again after this stop.
