Chapter Forty-Three
Overview
Holland and Adam learn the missing chained book Ben used is on Knife and Cross’s Stage 10, giving them a concrete lead. Tom suffers a disturbing cognitive break, and reality itself glitches as the sun abruptly vanishes. Holland resists growing closeness with Adam and insists they press on.
Summary
Holland, Adam, and Tom discover an empty rectangle on a dusty desk where a chained, medieval-looking book once sat. Tom recalls that Ben had asked to put chains on it, triggering Holland and Adam to suspect a link to the Professor’s Chained Library myth and the Alchemical Heart.
Fearing someone else has taken it, Holland pushes Tom to find who checked it out. Tom phones Devon and learns the book is currently on the set of Knife and Cross, Stage 10, for the season finale. This preserves the lead Ben left and sets their next destination.
Tom then appears disoriented, repeatedly raking his hair as blood stains his fingertips. He fails to register Adam’s presence and cannot be reached. Holland, recalling others who recovered from similar anomalies, reluctantly leaves him as Adam insists they can’t help.
Outside, the heat is oppressive and the sun behaves impossibly—frozen bright, then vanishing to sudden twilight—deepening Holland’s fear that reality is breaking around her. Adam steadies her and takes her hand. Drawn yet wary of his dangerous abilities, Holland pulls away and urges that they keep moving as darkness falls.
