Overview
Holland learns that Manuel Vargas is the Alchemical Heart in human guise. The Heart explains harsh costs of magic, including resurrection and time reversal. Choosing restraint, Holland declines bringing back her parents, instead activating her unknown innate ability. She then dispatches the Heart into the future per her father’s instructions, removing it from immediate pursuit.
Summary
Holland reflects on Mason Bishop’s wordless departure and the danger the Alchemical Heart still poses as others continue to seek it. An unexpected voice reveals Manuel Vargas, whose too-expressive smile and the missing hourglass expose the truth: Manuel is the Alchemical Heart, capable of taking multiple nearby forms.
The Alchemical Heart explains magic’s balancing costs. It confirms Holland’s father once used it to see the future, unintentionally creating a darker outcome. It warns that reviving the dead most upsets the balance, and that turning back time demands the price of forgetting. When Holland asks if this happened to her, the Heart refuses to answer, implying such knowledge would violate the cost paid.
Remembering her father’s screenplay warning to leave the dead in the past, Holland chooses not to bring back her parents. She concludes her father designed the treasure hunt so only she could keep the Heart safe and resist its most dangerous temptations, despite unintended consequences.
Seeking agency without breaking the balance, Holland asks for an ability. The Heart clarifies it can only activate a person’s unique, dormant power—no choices, and unknown until it manifests. Accepting the risks, Holland consents. The Heart activates her innate magic, cautioning it may take days or weeks to appear.
Finally, to prevent further pursuit, Holland decides the Heart must leave. Citing her father’s hold-slip instructions, she commands it to travel into the future to someone kind who needs it but does not want it, and who will use it only once. With this, Holland relinquishes the Heart and its immediate dangers.
