Chapter Thirty-Nine
Overview
Holland confronts Adam for erasing Cat’s memory; Adam claims it was necessary and denies ever altering Holland. At Jericho Monroe Studios, their search leads to Bungalow 17, stirring memories of Holland’s father. They find it taken over by VIC VanVleet’s VX3 and spot Vic meeting with Chance Garcia, complicating their investigation.
Summary
Holland confronts Adam for using his ability on Cat, demanding to know what he did. Adam doesn’t deny it and insists it was necessary, which alarms Holland because she wants Cat kept safe from their world. When Holland asks if he has ever altered her, Adam explains she would not be able to ask that if he had, adding that he dislikes using his power except when needed.
They walk deeper into Jericho Monroe Studios. Holland tries to ease the tension by sharing studio trivia, noticing Adam stays guarded with his hands in his pockets but eventually smiles. The setting’s Hollywood nostalgia contrasts with their unease, underscoring Holland’s frayed trust and Adam’s restraint.
They reach Bungalow 17, where the scent of oranges and a faded “Free oranges —Farmer Ben” sign stir Holland’s grief and memories of her father. Hoping for a connection, she approaches, only to spot the current production name: VX3.
Peering inside, Holland sees the bungalow now belongs to Vic VanVleet, who is meeting with Chance Garcia. The discovery reframes their lead: Ben’s old space has new, powerful occupants, raising the stakes for whatever evidence or answers they hoped to find there.
