Chapter Thirty-Four
Overview
The Watch Man reveals Ben Tierney’s old-magic lineage, why Ben was disowned, and that the devil is actually two brothers—hinting Adam is one. He drugs Adam to speak privately, entrusts Holland with an envelope from Ben, and warns the Alchemical Heart’s power is perilous. A brief time-freeze underscores mounting danger, leaving Holland wary of Adam.
Summary
In the Watch Man’s garden, he acknowledges knowing Ben Tierney and admiring his films, signaling that he understands Holland’s parentage. He explains there are two kinds of people in the hidden world: those born into it and those who find it later, placing Ben among an old-magic family with centuries of power.
The Watch Man describes the Tierney tradition: children called him at eighteen because inheritances depended on predicted lifespans. Ben was foretold to die young, so his family withheld their truth-detecting ability and effectively disowned him. The Watch Man had set Ben an impossible task for more time—find the Alchemical Heart and give it to one of the devils—but advised Ben against it.
When Holland presses about “devils,” the Watch Man reveals there are two brothers comprising the devil. Before elaborating, he admits to drugging Adam’s tea so they can speak privately. His glances at Adam make Holland fear the implication that Adam might be one of those brothers, despite her memories of Adam bleeding like a mortal.
The Watch Man produces a document envelope Ben left with him, saying Ben deemed the Heart too powerful to give to either devil and asked the Watch Man to deliver this to a daughter who came to him. He suggests futures are fluid, implying Ben may have had visions, and urges Holland to hide the envelope and show no one.
Suddenly, the Watch Man sweats what looks like blood and time stutters—he repeats the same warning as if reset, while a bead of red hangs motionless before falling. Adam wakes disoriented, and the Watch Man ends the meeting. Shaken and protective of the envelope, Holland thanks him and leaves, increasingly uncertain whether to trust Adam and considering going on alone.
